ALL SOULS DAY CELEBRATED AT THE SHRINE Fr. Pat Travers, Bishop Edward J. Burns and Deacon Charles Rohrbacher at the Shrine of St. Therese on All Souls Day

The Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed (All Souls Day) was celebrated on November 2nd at the Shrine of St. Therese with Mass at noon. Bishop Edward Burns presided with concelebrant Fr. Patrick Travers, the pastor of St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Juneau. Deacon Charles Rohrbacher proclaimed the Gospel and served at the altar.

During the Universal Prayer (Prayer of the Faithful), Bishop Burns prayed for each of the 56 people from around the diocese who have died in the past year. As the Bishop intoned: “For N. who has died with Christ, we pray to the Lord,” the deacon lit the candle inscribed with their name.

CANDLES ARE LIT FOR EACH OF THE 56 WHO DIED IN THE DIOCESE OF JUNEAU THIS YEAR As Bishop Burns intoned: “For N. who has died with Christ, we pray to the Lord,” Deacon Charles Rohrbacher lit the candle inscribed with their name.

Earlier in the fall, Bishop Burns invited parishes and missions around the diocese to send him the names of those who have died in the past year so that they could be remembered on All Souls Day. Ruth Vincent, Shrine Activities Coordinator, arranged to have their names inscribed on the votive candles and sent a letter to family members informing them of the intention of the diocese to remember their loved ones at the All Souls Day Mass and inviting them to participate if possible.

After Mass family members in attendance took home the memorial candle for their loved one. Those candles remaining were boxed up and sent out to the parishes. Bishop Burns asked pastors to personally deliver each candle to families who have lost a loved one this year as a sign of his continued support and prayers and also that of the Catholic community.

There was a small reception after Mass in the Shrine Gift Shop Cabin.
