Hospice and Home Care of Juneau: Providing compassionate support and care

Catholic Community Service (CCS) exists to live out the church’s corporal works of mercy. This mission is carried out through three distinct divisions, Southeast Senior Services, Children and Family Services and Hospice and Home Care of Juneau. Many lives, families and communities are touched by the over 25 programs and services offered through CCS. We would like to share with you a story from a family CCS has helped through Hospice –people *you* have helped by supporting CCS. You have our Thanks!

-Erin Walker-Tolles, Executive Director

It was June 2016 when Nancy and her husband, Robert, were referred to Hospice & Home Care of Juneau, a division of Catholic Community Service. Robert shares that during his “first contact with Hospice, this wonderful woman comforted me and patiently responded to my inquiries about the services provided, the care Nancy would be given and how pain relieving medicine would be used.”

The Hospice philosophy focuses on comfort care and quality of life for the patient and their family. A variety of services are offered (but not required), allowing each individual to receive the care they prefer. Upon noticing the end was drawing near, a referral was made by Nancy’s doctor and then the Hospice staff began providing a lot of support in the home. “They put into motion what seemed like a whirlwind of service providers to attend to Nancy’s needs and the needs of our family and myself.”

Hospice provides compassionate care and support not only to the patients, but the families as well with patient-directed, team-oriented, holistic services.

“All those special ladies lovingly and gently administered to Nancy and kept me informed as to what I should do and what to expect in the following days. They were not only professional with Nancy but comforting to our daughter, granddaughter and myself.”

Services include Skilled Nurse on call 24/7, Physical, Occupational, and Speech Therapy, Home Health Aids, Social Worker, Chaplain, Volunteer Support and Bereavement Support. Each individual and family receive help to decide what mix of services will work best for them.

It is a privilege and honor to serve families like Robert and Nancy. We strive to help everyone so that they can genuinely say what Robert shared – “God bless all of you and thank you for doing what you do so well!”

Hospice services are provided to those in need regardless of ability to pay and bereavement support free to anyone in need.
