The Cathedral of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in downtown Juneau contributed to Juneau’s Year of Kindness with a bake sale and canned fruit drive February 18 and 19. Parishioners raised enough money to buy the Glory Hole a new pressure cooker and fill Glory Hole shelves with canned fruit.
Glory Hole Facilities Coordinator and Day Cook Mabel Pittman had specifically requested these items and said the donation “made our day.”
Pittman said she puts up a lot of donated food for Glory Hole residents, especially fish and vegetables. “It really helps cut down on our costs and helps with the sack lunch program.” Pittman said the Glory Hole shelves are always in need of canned fruit. She said they also appreciate donations of fresh eggs and wild game, items they are unable to purchase. Pittman specifically requested wide mouth canning lids. She said she has enough jars and rings.
The Juneau Police Department initiated the 2017 Year of Kindness, which started January 1. The goal is for every person in Juneau to do one kind act a day for one year. One kind act each week should be directed toward someone outside a person’s normal group of friends. Central Council of the Tlingit and Haida Indian Tribes of Alaska, the Juneau School District, Bartlett Regional Hospital, the City and Borough of Juneau and multiple private businesses and organizations are supporting the effort.
