Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ:
In my most recent pastoral letter to the faithful of the Diocese of Juneau, I wrote of the need for us to ‘know, love and serve Jesus Christ through His Body, the Church.’ Many of you know that the priests of the Diocese are my first priority, for through them we are able to strengthen the Church. These good men assist us to know Christ through the Word and the Sacraments. That is why I take the transferring of priests from one assignment to another as a very important part of my ministry to you, the good people of the Diocese.
After much consultation and personally discerning the needs of the Diocese, I would like to announce the transfer of the following priests:
• Effective February 9th, I am relieving Fr. Scott Settimo from his duties as pastor of Holy Name Parish in Ketchikan to a time of prayerful discernment of a vocation to the contemplative life here in the Diocese of Juneau. He will temporarily reside and offer priestly service to the faithful of St. Rose of Lima Parish in Wrangell.
• Effective February 9th, I am relieving Fr. Patrick Travers from his duties as pastor of St. Paul the Apostle Parish in Juneau and appointing him as pastor of Holy Name Parish in Ketchikan.
• Effective February 2nd, I am relieving Fr. Jean Paulin Lockulu from his duties as pastor of St. John by the Sea and the faithful of POW Island and appointing him as pastor of St. Paul the Apostle Parish in Juneau.
• Effective February 2th, I am relieving Fr. Edmund Penisten from his responsibilities in the Northern Missions and appointing him pastor of St. John’s-by-the-Sea parish in Klawock and to the faithful of POW Island.
• Effective February 2th, I am relieving Fr. Steven Gallagher of his duties as parochial vicar of St. Paul the Apostle Church and assigning him as the priest responsible for St. Ann’s parish in Yakutat and the missions of Sacred Heart in Hoonah; St. Francis Chapel in Tenakee; Holy Family in Gustavus as well as the faithful in Pelican and Kake. Fr. Gallagher will continue to reside at St. Paul the Apostle Church.
Please keep these good priests in your prayers during this time of transition and remember the faithful in those parishes who are saying goodbye to their current pastor and welcoming a new pastor in the New Year.
May the Lord, whose Incarnation and Nativity we celebrate, pour out His grace, peace and blessings on the priests, deacons, religious and faithful in all of our parishes and missions.
Sincerely yours in Christ,
Most Reverend Edward J. Burns
Bishop of Juneau
