Whenever one of the priests of the diocese is assigned to a new parish, the bishop formally installs the new pastor in a special ceremony celebrated during Sunday Mass.
The installation of a new pastor begins at the door of the church, where the pastor takes possession of his new parish by receiving the keys of the church and the church seal from the bishop.
The bishop then formally introduces him to his pastoral staff, to the pastoral council and to the congregation.
After the homily, the new pastor goes to the altar and with his hand on the Book of the Gospels makes the Profession of Faith before the bishop and the people of the parish, followed by the Oath of Fidelity, both which he then signs and seals.
Then in procession the new pastor, the bishop and other ministers process through the church itself.
At the altar, the ambo, the presidential chair and the confessional, the bishop charges the new pastor with the faithful carrying out of the ministries they symbolize.
On September 11, 2011 Father Perry Kenaston was installed by Bishop Edward Burns as pastor of Sacred Heart parish at the 9 am Mass in Haines.
At 3:00 pm the same day, Fr. Perry and Bishop Burns traveled to Skagway (by float plane) for his installation as pastor of St. Theresa of the Child Jesus parish.
On September 18, Father Jean Paulin Lockulu was installed at St. John by the Sea in Klawock on Prince of Wales Island. Fr. JP also serves the missions of St. John including Naukati and Thorne Bay.
On October 30, Father Jim Blaney, OMI, was installed at the 11:00 am mass at St. Gregory Nazianzen in Sitka.
A potluck followed and the “welcome” cake was a big hit portraying Fr. Jim on his bike, riding toward the church. Altar servers (left to right) Madison Webb, Jordan Diego, and Zoe Krupa assist Bishop Burns and Fr. Jim during the Liturgy of the Eucharist.
