New Associate Sister of Charity

By Sr. Dee Sizler, SC

On August 11, Angela Smith was received as an Associate in Mission of the Sisters of Charity of Cincinnati at St. Paul Church in Juneau. Witnessing her commitment was Mary Jo Mersmann, Director of Associates from Cincinnati, Ohio.

Angela joins a community of five other Associates and one vowed Sister living in the Juneau Diocese. Several others are in formation at this time preparing to be Associates in Mission here in southeast Alaska.

Angela learned of the Sisters of Charity Associates from St. Paul parishioner and Associate, Eileen Casey. Angela already had a deep devotion to St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, the founder of the Sisters of Charity. So she was readily drawn to the mission and vision of the SC Community.

Angela’s own family life and ministry resonates with the life of St. Elizabeth. She and her husband, Dr. Douglas Smith, have six children. She ministers as teacher and nurturer of children and families. As a teacher Angela has been a leader in home schooling in the Juneau community. She is also gifted in music and exudes a joyful energy, often contributing to parish activities.

All this is fed by her deep faith life and commitment to the gospel call to “love one another as I have loved you.”

By becoming an Associate in Mission Angela joins 192 other women and men around the country who are also Sisters of Charity Associates who support and extend the mission of the 385 vowed members. Each Associate makes a commitment which is renewed each year to pray, serve and witness to their faith in the spirit of charity.

The Associate movement in North America is a strong presence in the Catholic Church. Associates contribute their time and talent in service by living out the spirit of their Community in their own work and families.
